USH 14 DOT Construction Project, Upcoming Traffic Switch

Maps of Construction

9-4-20

7-17-20

Work continues on the USH 14 project from Madison to Oregon.  Updates in the separate work zones are as follows:

STH 138:

-All travel lanes are open.  Minor work items have and will take place in the upcoming weeks, but will have little to no traffic impact.  If additional work is added to the project that will impact traffic, it will be noted in future weekly updates.

CTH MM (This is the focal work zone based on schedule):

-Traffic in the Eastbound USH 14 direction is reduced to one lane through the work zone.  All ramps at the interchange will remain open, but expect slowdowns during peak traffic hours.

-Lane closures are scheduled on CTH MM under and adjacent to USH 14 from 9 AM to 3 PM in the upcoming weeks.  All ramps are open and turning movements will still be allowed.  Minor repairs to the bridge components will take place during this time.

-Crews poured the new concrete overlay for the bridge earlier this week.  Crews will perform pavement approach work next week with removals, grading, and potentially pouring the new concrete pavement approaches at the end of the week.

-The Eastbound USH 14 structure at CTH MM will be worked on until late August.  One lane of traffic will be open through the work zone at all times.

North of CTH MM to the Beltline:

-Inside lane closures in both directions of USH 14 are not anticipated next week.  Lane closures are anticipated in the upcoming weeks.  When lane closures do take place, for the Eastbound direction of USH 14, lane closures will not take place during afternoon peak traffic hours.  For the Westbound direction of USH 14, lane closures will not take place during morning peak traffic hours.  These lane closures are needed for crews to construct the median crossovers that will be utilized with next year’s construction.

No traffic switches are scheduled for next week.  I will plan to provide further details regarding traffic switches before they take place.  Note, any schedules shown are subject to change.  Please be safe in work zones.  If you have any questions, feel free to reply to me.

Thanks,

The contractors began work for the USH 14 project earlier this week.  For purposes of this email and likely future ones, I will break down the length of the project into separate work sites:

STH 138 (This is the focus work zone at this time):

-The traffic control switch was finished early Monday morning with STH 138 closed under USH 14, and USH 14 closed over STH 138.  USH 14 traffic utilizes the off and on ramps at STH 138 to navigate around the work zone.  Northbound STH 138 traffic has a posted detour route utilizing Westbound USH 14 to CTH MM then to Eastbound USH 14, and Southbound STH 138 has a posted detour route utilizing Eastbound USH 14 to STH 59.

-Crews are working on bridge demolition that will continue into and through next week.

-This work zone is scheduled to be completed in mid-June.

CTH MM:

-The traffic control switch in the Westbound USH 14 direction was completed Monday, which pushes traffic towards the median side of the roadway.  One lane of traffic for Westbound USH 14 will remain open through this work zone.

-This week, crews worked on the outside half of this structure removing deteriorated concrete in the deck.  This removal work will continue into next week.

-This work zone will remain as is until early/mid-May, at which time, traffic will be switched to the outside of the roadway for the remainder of the bridge to be worked on.

North of CTH MM to the Beltline:

-Lane closures occurred in both directions of USH 14.  Lane closures in this stretch may be set in place for long durations of time as more work commences.

-This week, crews began prep work for construction of median crossovers.  Traffic will use the proposed median crossovers while future construction is occurring on the McCoy Rd bridges as well as the Byrne Rd bridge.

-Prep work and potential grading to occur next week in this work zone, although it is dependent on weather and other schedules.

No traffic changes are scheduled for next week.  I will plan to provide further details regarding traffic switches before they take place.  Note, any schedules shown are subject to change.  Please be safe in work zones.  If you have any questions, feel free to reply to me.

Hello,

I am the Project Engineer for the USH 14 construction project between Fitchburg and Oregon in Dane County. The project involves bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction, temporary median crossover construction, beamguard and cable guard improvements, temporary roadway widening, and minor roadway improvements.  Work is scheduled to begin this upcoming Sunday afternoon/evening with traffic switches and the establishment of project work zones.  The anticipated traffic changes starting Monday morning are as follows (subject to change due to weather or other scheduling):

STH 138 will be closed to traffic under the USH 14 bridge.  USH 14 will also be closed above STH 138.  The four ramps surrounding the bridge will remain open, but due to STH 138 being closed, not all movements will be available.  This closure will be in effect until Mid June:

-The posted detour for southbound STH 138 traffic (from Oregon) can utilize the on ramp to eastbound USH 14, take eastbound USH 14 to eastbound STH 59, and use eastbound STH 59 back to STH 138.

-Northbound STH 138 (from Stoughton) will be directed to the on ramp to westbound USH 14, take westbound USH 14 to CTH MM, and use CTH MM back to eastbound USH 14.

-USH 14 traffic will take the STH 138 exits through the roundabout to the ramps back to USH 14.

Signage will be placed along USH 14 and CTH MM to alert the traveling public of the STH 138 closure.

Westbound USH 14 will have a lane closure between STH 138 and the Madison Beltline.  One lane of through traffic will remain open at all times.  Work will take place on the bridge above CTH MM during this closure.  Temporary roadway and crossover work will also take place.  Expect this lane closure (or portions of this length) to be in effect until September.

Eastbound USH 14 will have a lane closure between the Madison Beltline and STH 138.  One lane of traffic will remain open at all times.  Work will take place on the bridge above CTH MM during this closure.  Temporary roadway and crossover work will also take place.  Expect this lane closure (or portions of this length) to be in effect until September.

To help illustrate, please see the attached sheets highlighting the closed sections of roadway and allowable traffic movements depicted by arrows.  Also note, sections of USH 14 will also have a speed reduction of 55 MPH during the construction.  Signage will be placed for those stretches of roadway.

Some of the described work is in preparation for the construction that will take place in 2021.  That work is anticipated to start in March 2021 and go through November.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.  Email is best.

Thanks,
